This assumes your profile already exists and is claimed. If you haven't set one up yet, start with our Google Business Profile setup service first — this guide is specifically about optimizing a profile that's already live.
Step 1: Pick the right primary category
Specificity wins. A business offering "Continental Restaurant" over the generic "Restaurant" category, or "Pediatric Clinic" over "Medical Clinic," matches more precisely to what people in Abuja are actually searching for.
Step 2: Fill in every field completely
Hours, service areas, attributes, and a description that naturally mentions what you do and where you're based — every blank field is a missed signal. This is the most time-consuming step and also the one with the biggest impact.
Step 3: Add real, recent photos
Genuine photos of your location, team, and actual work outperform stock imagery, and profiles with recent photos tend to get more engagement than ones that haven't been updated in months.
Step 4: Use Google Posts regularly
Posts are a low-effort way to show Google — and potential customers — that the business is active. A short update every week or two, about an offer, a new service, or a recent project, is enough.
Step 5: Monitor the Q&A section
Anyone can ask or answer questions on your profile, including competitors or unrelated users. Proactively adding your own common questions and answers keeps this section accurate and useful before someone else fills it in for you.
Step 6: Respond to every review
Reply to positive and negative reviews alike, promptly and professionally. Future customers read how a business handles criticism as closely as they read the reviews themselves.
Step 7: Check Insights monthly
Your profile's performance data shows how people found you and what they did next — calls, website visits, direction requests. Checking this monthly tells you whether the previous six steps are actually translating into activity.
